\u201cThat log is fabricated,\u201d Kincaid snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen why,\u201d I asked, \u201cwas it hidden under Admiral Rusk\u2019s personal classification authority?\u201d<\/p>\n
The courtroom went still.<\/p>\n
Kincaid signaled to Hale.<\/p>\n
Hale exploded upward. His elbow struck my ribs, directly beneath an old surgical scar. Pain flashed white. He shoved me into the rail and sprinted for Owen.<\/p>\n
The scarred old judge swung his cane again, but Hale caught it and ripped it away. Owen raised the document. Hale struck him across the jaw. Owen crashed against the jury box, blood appearing at his lip.<\/p>\n
I hit Hale from the side.<\/p>\n
We slammed into the evidence cart. Metal trays scattered across the floor. He grabbed my collar and drove his forearm against my throat.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should have followed the order on that ship,\u201d he hissed.<\/p>\n
That sentence told me everything.<\/p>\n
He had not come for stolen files.<\/p>\n
He had come to finish a cleanup that began six years earlier.<\/p>\n
I hooked my boot behind his ankle and dropped my weight. Hale fell backward. Commander Vale kicked his pistol away as it slipped from his holster. The bailiff finally moved\u2014not toward me, but toward Hale.<\/p>\n
Together, we pinned him facedown.<\/p>\n

Owen pushed himself upright, one hand against his bleeding mouth.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBelow the courthouse,\u201d Lucas answered. \u201cThey brought me here last night.\u201d<\/p>\n
A heavy impact shook the floor.<\/p>\n
The speaker filled with shouting.<\/p>\n
Lucas came back, urgent now.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood. Chief Grant\u2019s recordings reached my office eighteen minutes ago. A rescue team has located the bailiff\u2019s daughter at a private residence in Chesapeake. She is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n
The bailiff collapsed. Halstead ordered the building locked down and Lucas found.<\/p>\n
A sailor checked the side corridor.<\/p>\n
\u201cJudge Kincaid is heading toward the service elevator.\u201d<\/p>\n
I ran.<\/p>\n
Admiral Halstead and Commander Vale followed.<\/p>\n

I chased him through a maintenance corridor toward the sound of boots and shouting. We burst into a storage chamber where two armed contractors were dragging a thin, gray-haired man from a chair.<\/p>\n
Lucas.<\/p>\n
He was older, scarred, and barely able to stand, but his eyes were the same.<\/p>\n
One contractor raised his weapon.<\/p>\n
Kincaid grabbed the man\u2019s arm and pulled the muzzle toward me.<\/p>\n
\u201cShoot her!\u201d<\/p>\n
Lucas drove his shoulder into the second contractor. The shot went high, blasting concrete above my head. I crossed the room, struck the first gunman\u2019s wrist, and trapped his arm against my chest.<\/p>\n

Admiral Halstead ordered the members to stand.<\/p>\n
She lifted my Medal of Honor from the rail, but I covered it with my hand.<\/p>\n

Lucas stood beside me.<\/p>\n
