Part 2
The sheer force of the twelve-ton truck slamming into the mercenary line was earth-shattering. The vehicle plowed through the attackers, sending two of them flying into the roadside ditch while crushing their primary barricade into twisted scrap metal. Bullets rained against my armored windshield in a deafening staccato, spider-webbing the bulletproof glass but completely failing to penetrate the military-grade reinforcement.
I slammed the brakes, threw the truck into park, and kicked my heavy steel door open. Using the thick door as a shield, I raised my M4 carbine and laid down a relentless volley of suppressive fire. “Move! Move! Move!” I screamed through the chaos of the gunfire.
The back door of the surviving Suburban kicked open, and two bleeding Secret Service agents tumbled out, dragging Secretary of State David Hayes between them. The Secretary looked pale, his suit covered in dust, but miraculously unharmed.
“Colonel Reed!” one of the agents shouted, instantly recognizing me as I neutralized a mercenary trying to flank us from the dense tree line.
“Get him in the back of my rig! Now!” I commanded, never taking my eyes off the perimeter.
Suddenly, a towering mercenary blind-sided me. He had managed to crawl over the hood of the burning SUV and launched himself at me, knocking my rifle out of my hands. We crashed onto the harsh asphalt. He swung a brutal right hook, splitting my lip, but twenty years of relentless close-quarters combat training took over. I slipped his next punch, drove my knee savagely into his ribs, and used his own momentum to flip him over my shoulder. As he hit the ground hard, I drew my tactical combat knife and pinned him, striking the nerve cluster on his neck to render him instantly unconscious.
I grabbed my rifle, scrambled up, and provided cover fire as the agents hauled Secretary Hayes into my mobile command center. I threw myself into the driver’s seat just as a rogue bullet shattered my side mirror.
“Are we secure?” I yelled back to the cabin.
“The Secretary is secure, Colonel, but we have hostiles in pursuit!” the agent yelled back. “Comms are jammed. We need a hardened structure to wait out the cavalry!”
My mind raced. We were a mile and a half from the nearest police precinct, and my truck’s tires were severely compromised by debris. There was only one fortress nearby with high walls, reinforced iron gates, and limited access points.
Julian Sterling’s estate. My sister’s engagement party.
“Hold on!” I shouted, wrestling the heavy steering wheel as the truck fishtailed. I drove like a maniac, swerving through wealthy suburban streets as two black pursuit vehicles fell in right behind us, firing sporadically at my armored tailgate.
We approached the towering iron gates of the Sterling estate at sixty miles per hour. I didn’t slow down. “Brace yourselves!”
The truck smashed through the heavy iron gates like they were made of toothpicks, tearing the metal off its hinges with a horrifying screech. I skidded onto the immaculate circular driveway, tearing up Julian’s prized landscaping, and slammed the truck into park right in front of the grand entrance.
Guests in ballgowns and tuxedos screamed, dropping champagne flutes and scattering in absolute terror. The string quartet stopped playing with a violent screech of strings.
I kicked the door open, stepping out in my blood-spattered tactical vest, combat boots, and an assault rifle strapped to my chest. Blood dripped down my chin from my split lip.
My father, Marcus, froze on the marble steps. His jaw dropped. Beside him, Jessica clutched Julian’s arm, her eyes wide with a mixture of horror and disbelief.
“Harper?!” my father gasped, his face turning a sickly shade of white. “What in the hell are you doing?! Have you lost your mind?!”
“Shut up and get inside!” I roared, my voice booming across the courtyard. “Everyone get down on the floor, away from the windows! Now!”
Julian stepped forward, puffing his chest out in a pathetic display of authority. “Listen here, you crazy bitch, I don’t know what kind of stunt this is, but you’re paying for my gates—”
I didn’t have time for his fragile ego. The pursuit vehicles were screaming up the driveway. I stepped forward, grabbed Julian by his expensive silk lapel, and violently shoved him backward into my father. They both tumbled through the double doors, sprawling onto the foyer floor.
“I said get inside!” I barked, raising my rifle just as the first hostile vehicle skidded to a halt at the edge of the driveway. The twist hit me like a physical punch to the gut. As the heavily armed men stepped out of their vehicles, I recognized the distinct crest etched onto their tactical chest rigs. It wasn’t a foreign terrorist cell at all. It was Vanguard Solutions—a private military contracting firm owned exclusively by Julian Sterling’s father.
The men rushing the house were on his own family’s payroll.

Part 3
The realization that Julian’s family business was behind the assassination attempt on the Secretary of State sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through my veins. There was no time to question the politics or the corporate espionage behind it. Survival was the only metric that mattered right now.
I backed into the grand foyer, kicking the massive oak double doors shut and throwing the heavy brass deadbolts. “Barricade the doors!” I screamed at the bewildered waitstaff and the few groomsmen who hadn’t fled to the wine cellar. “Use the dining tables! Move!”
The Secret Service agents rushed Secretary Hayes into the center of the mansion, positioning him behind a solid marble pillar in the rotunda. Outside, the Vanguard mercenaries began unloading a barrage of automatic gunfire against the front of the house. The deafening roar of shattered stained glass and splintering wood echoed through the estate. Guests shrieked, cowering beneath the hors d’oeuvres tables.
Julian scrambled to his feet, his tuxedo torn, his face pale with absolute panic. “My father’s men? Why are my father’s men shooting at my house?!”
“Because your father’s firm just tried to execute the Secretary of State, and we brought the target right to your doorstep!” I shouted, ejecting a spent magazine from my M4 and slamming a fresh one home. “Your family is going to federal prison, Julian, but right now, I need you to stay down before you get your head blown off!”
My father, trembling behind a velvet sofa, stared at me as if I were an alien. “Harper… what is going on? You… you deliver meal kits! Why do you have a machine gun?”
“I lied, Dad. I’m a Colonel in the United States Army, and I’m the only thing keeping you all alive tonight,” I snapped, peering through the shattered window. The mercenaries were advancing up the steps. They were breaching.
“They’re coming through the east wing terrace!” one of the Secret Service agents yelled from the hallway.
“I’ve got the front!” I replied. “Defend the package!”
The front doors burst open in a shower of splinters as a tactical breaching charge detonated. The concussive wave knocked my sister Jessica to the floor, her ears bleeding. Three Vanguard mercenaries stormed into the foyer, laser sights cutting through the smoke.
I didn’t hesitate. I dropped to one knee and fired precise, controlled bursts. Double tap. Center mass. The first two operatives dropped instantly, their body armor failing against the armor-piercing rounds of my military-issued carbine. The third mercenary returned fire, clipping the marble pillar right next to my head. Shards of stone sliced my cheek, but I ignored the sting.
I lunged forward, closing the distance before he could recalibrate his aim. I tackled him around the waist, driving my shoulder into his solar plexus. We crashed violently into a towering champagne pyramid, sending thousands of glass shards and expensive liquor raining down on us. He scrambled for a secondary weapon strapped to his thigh, but I delivered a devastating elbow strike to his jaw, feeling the bone crack beneath my pad. He went limp.
Breathing heavily, I stood up, wiping the mixture of champagne and blood from my face. I tapped my encrypted earpiece, the jamming signal finally breaking. “Command, this is Colonel Reed. Code Black at the Sterling Estate. I need immediate air support and a tactical breach team. We have multiple hostile elements engaging.”
“Copy that, Colonel,” a voice crackled back. “Apache gunships and FBI Hostage Rescue Teams are sixty seconds out. Hold your position.”
I didn’t have to wait sixty seconds. The distinct, terrifying thumping of military helicopter rotors vibrated the very foundations of the mansion. Blinding spotlights flooded the front lawn, cutting through the night. Over a loudspeaker, a booming voice echoed: “THIS IS THE UNITED STATES MILITARY. DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY OR YOU WILL BE ELIMINATED.”
The surviving Vanguard mercenaries, realizing they were outgunned by the full might of the U.S. government, threw their weapons onto the grass and surrendered. The firefight was over.
Dozens of tactical operatives swarmed the mansion, securing the perimeter. Secretary of State David Hayes stepped out from behind his marble cover, brushing plaster dust from his shoulders. He looked around the devastated foyer, then locked eyes with me.
My father, Jessica, and Julian were slowly standing up, completely shell-shocked. They looked at the heavily armed soldiers who were now standing at attention around me, forming a protective circle.
Secretary Hayes walked directly up to my father. “Are you Marcus Reed?” he asked, his voice echoing in the quiet room.
“Yes… yes, sir,” my father stammered.
“You should be incredibly proud,” the Secretary said with absolute authority. “Do you realize who just saved my life? Colonel Harper Reed is the finest tactical mind and the bravest commander in the United States Armed Forces. If it weren’t for her, the country would be in mourning tomorrow.”
The silence that followed was deafening. My father opened and closed his mouth like a fish, unable to speak. Jessica stared at the ground, her face flushed with a deep, humiliating crimson. Julian was already being handcuffed by federal agents, sobbing about how he didn’t know anything about his father’s treason.
“Harper…” my father finally choked out, taking a step toward me, tears welling in his eyes. “I… I had no idea. I’m so sorry we treated you like…”
I held up a hand, stopping him in his tracks. “Don’t, Dad. It doesn’t matter anymore.”
I turned my back on them and walked out the shattered front doors into the cool night air. I walked past the flashing lights and the handcuffed mercenaries, heading straight to my battered, bullet-ridden command truck.
Sitting on the rear bumper, I reached into the hidden pocket of my tactical vest and pulled out a worn, sealed envelope. My mother had given it to me on the day I enlisted, eighteen years ago. “Open when you no longer doubt yourself,” she had written on the front.
With bloody, trembling fingers, I broke the seal and unfolded the stationary.
My dearest Harper, I always knew you were meant for extraordinary things. Your father and sister are blinded by shiny, superficial things, but you have a heart of iron and a spirit of fire. Never let their small minds make you feel small. True strength is knowing exactly who you are, even when the room refuses to see you. I am so proud of you. Love, Mom.
A single tear cut through the dirt and blood on my cheek. I folded the letter and tucked it safely over my heart. I didn’t look back at the mansion. I didn’t look back at my family, who were finally seeing me for the first time. I didn’t need their validation anymore. I was exactly who I was meant to be.
I stood up, gestured for the extraction chopper to land, and walked into the blinding light.
