Just minutes earlier, Alpha Company was executing a flawless night-assault demonstration. The 1,500-horsepower steel beasts had been tearing through target grids with depleted-uranium armor-piercing rounds, turning simulated enemy bunkers into molten debris. The firepower was absolute—a terrifying display of American military dominance. But then, the command grid glitched. A rogue radar blip materialized inside the hot impact zone, moving at impossible speed against the line of fire.
Master Sergeant Marcus Cole, a 20-year veteran commanding the lead tank, War Hammer, stared through his Commander’s Independent Thermal Viewer. “Cap, that’s no target drone,” Cole’s voice crackled through the static, edged with rare adrenaline. “It’s a blacked-out tactical vehicle. No IFF transponder. It just took a direct splash from a 120mm High Explosive round and it’s still rolling!”
Silence fell over the command tent. Military protocols were razor-sharp: any unidentified asset entering a live-fire impact zone during heavy armor shelling was to be neutralized immediately. Yet, as the mysterious vehicle ground to a halt inside the smoking crater, its side panel bore a highly classified Pentagon stencil that Vance had only seen once before in top-secret briefings.
“Hold position, War Hammer,” Vance ordered, stepping out into the desert night air thick with the smell of burned propellant and diesel fuel. “We inspect that hull now.”
Accompanied by a squad of fully armed Military Police, Vance and Cole approached the smoking carcass of the unmarked machine. The driver’s hatch hung open, swaying on bent hinges. Inside, the navigation screens were still glowing—flooding the cabin with eerie blue light. But there was no driver. No crew. Only a encrypted satellite uplink transmitting a real-time countdown timer directly to an overseas server, alongside a physical briefcase handcuffed to the steering column.
Cole reached down, his tactical glove wiping dust off the briefcase tag. It bore the name of a high-ranking Defense Department official who had mysteriously vanished from Washington D.C. forty-eight hours prior.
“Sir,” Cole whispered, unholstering his sidearm as his eyes scanned the pitch-black desert ridge surrounding them. “If nobody was driving this rig… who brought it right into our line of fire?”
Before Vance could respond, every radio frequency jammed with deafening static, followed by a single automated voice broadcasting over the emergency channel: Objective reached. Phase Two initiated.
The desert wind howled through the canyon, carrying the distant hum of approaching unmarked helicopters.
