“Sir, Dechaineux and Farncomb aren’t answering secondary channels,” Lieutenant Sarah Jenkins reported, her voice trembling. “Radar shows Farncomb diving past safe operating depths, while Dechaineux is maneuvering into an attack vector.”
Forty miles off San Diego, inside the steel belly of HMAS Dechaineux, Commander Marcus Hayes stared at an unsigned cipher received via satellite. The order originated from a high-level naval terminal in Washington—ordering an immediate tactical strike drill using live torpedo tracks against American targets. But Hayes knew his ship’s protocols. This was no drill protocol; it lacked the sovereign authentication key.
“Hold fire,” Hayes growled to his weapons control supervisor. “Someone is playing us.”
Suddenly, Farncomb emitted a low-frequency emergency acoustic ping—three sharp bursts. Panic surged through the fleet. On board the Momsen, alarms blared assonar picked up an unidentified metallic crunch from the abyss beneath Farncomb. It wasn’t an engine failure.
