A shoe scraped the mat.<\/p>\n
I dropped low.<\/p>\n
A body lunged past me, and something hard cracked against the wall where my head had been.<\/p>\n
Emergency lights flashed red.<\/p>\n
Vance was holding a collapsible baton.<\/p>\n
I caught his wrist with both hands before he could swing again. He drove his shoulder into my chest, knocking me backward. Air burst from my lungs. We hit the mat together.<\/p>\n
Carver surged toward Rourke.<\/p>\n
Nolan shouted, \u201cCommander!\u201d<\/p>\n
Rourke reached for his pistol.<\/p>\n
Carver grabbed his forearm.<\/p>\n
The two men slammed into the door.<\/p>\n
I twisted Vance\u2019s wrist until the baton fell, drove my knee into his thigh, and shoved him away. He tackled me around the waist before I could stand. My shoulder hit the floor hard enough to blur my vision.<\/p>\n
Across the room, Nolan suddenly jumped on Carver\u2019s back.<\/p>\n
\u201cGet off him!\u201d Nolan yelled.<\/p>\n
Carver threw him over his shoulder.<\/p>\n
Nolan crashed against a bench and didn\u2019t get up.<\/p>\n
Rourke finally ripped free and drew his weapon.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody freeze!\u201d<\/p>\n
This time, we did.<\/p>\n
The emergency lights flickered.<\/p>\n
Then the main lights returned.<\/p>\n
Rourke aimed at Carver.<\/p>\n
Carver slowly raised his hands.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou assaulted a commanding officer,\u201d Rourke said.<\/p>\n
Carver smiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what you think happened?\u201d<\/p>\n
His calmness made my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n
Then the wall speaker clicked.<\/p>\n
A man\u2019s voice filled the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cCommander Rourke, lower your weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rourke went rigid.<\/p>\n
I knew that voice. Everyone at the facility did.<\/p>\n
Deputy Director Malcolm Shaw.<\/p>\n

The layer above Carver.<\/p>\n
Rourke\u2019s gun shifted toward me.<\/p>\n
\u201cCommander,\u201d I said, \u201cif Shaw authorized this, ask him for the operation number.\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
Rourke looked upward. \u201cSir, provide the operation number.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another pause.<\/p>\n
Then Shaw said, \u201cThat information is above your clearance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rourke\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n
I stepped toward Nolan, who was groaning beside the bench.<\/p>\n
Carver noticed.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t let her touch him!\u201d<\/p>\n
Too late.<\/p>\n
I grabbed Nolan\u2019s shirt collar and pulled him partly upright.<\/p>\n
\u201cTell him,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
Nolan\u2019s eyes were unfocused.<\/p>\n
\u201cTell Rourke why you were scared of the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carver lunged.<\/p>\n
Rourke swung the pistol back at him. \u201cDon\u2019t move!\u201d<\/p>\n
Nolan coughed.<\/p>\n
Then he whispered, \u201cBecause it wasn\u2019t off.\u201d<\/p>\n
Everybody stared at him.<\/p>\n
I felt cold spread through my chest.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d Rourke asked.<\/p>\n
Nolan pointed weakly toward the black camera dome.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe red light was disabled. Not the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carver\u2019s face went gray.<\/p>\n
Nolan looked at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything in this room has been streaming somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n
The speaker clicked again.<\/p>\n
But this time Shaw didn\u2019t sound calm.<\/p>\n

Nolan started laughing.<\/p>\n
Blood glistened on his teeth.<\/p>\n

He snarled. \u201cYou have no idea what you stepped into.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nolan dragged himself upright.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he said. \u201cShe doesn\u2019t. Not all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The speaker had gone silent.<\/p>\n
Nolan pointed toward the camera.<\/p>\n

Rourke looked sick.<\/p>\n

Rourke\u2019s authorization code had been cloned months earlier from an administrative terminal Shaw controlled. The forged approvals were designed to make every illegal session look like Rourke\u2019s responsibility if the operation ever collapsed.<\/p>\n
He had been the intended fall guy.<\/p>\n
