For three seconds, I considered lying.<\/p>\n
Then Grant\u2019s eyes dropped from the tattoo to the scar running beside it, and I knew that would be pointless.<\/p>\n
Emily gave a nervous laugh. \u201cSeriously, Grant. Stop. Everyone\u2019s staring.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey should be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Something in his tone made her smile disappear.<\/p>\n
He lowered his salute slowly.<\/p>\n

The first trip burned through my glove.<\/p>\n

After the crash, his staff rewrote the timeline to make it look like the aircraft entered a safe zone and was hit unexpectedly.\u201d<\/p>\n
My mother sat down hard in the nearest chair.<\/p>\n
I finally understood the mysterious call she had received.<\/p>\n
Vane\u2019s people had been containing the story before I was even home.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the investigation?\u201d Grant asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt caught up with him,\u201d Owen said. \u201cTwo years later, the Inspector General found the original reconnaissance log on an archived server. Vane lost his command. The classified findings cleared the aircrew and everyone involved in the rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant looked at me.<\/p>\n

I looked at Emily.<\/p>\n

Emily stared at the broken champagne glass on the floor.<\/p>\n

She winced.<\/p>\n

Tears filled her eyes.<\/p>\n

I believed she meant it.<\/p>\n
