The transport vanished into the storm as my glide canopy opened. Three thermal drones swept toward my original descent path.<\/p>\n
I cut the electronic beacon from my harness and threw it into the darkness. The drones followed its heat signature while I collapsed half the canopy, dropping hard toward the gorge.<\/p>\n
My boots struck an ice shelf. I rolled, slammed my shoulder against rock, and stopped inches from a frozen ravine. Pain burned through my left arm, but nothing was broken.<\/p>\n
I buried the canopy and moved.<\/p>\n
The minefield appeared as shallow circles where wind had failed to settle the snow. Beyond it, vibration sensors had been drilled into the canyon walls. I crossed by stepping onto exposed stone and moving only when the storm shook the ridge.<\/p>\n
A drone passed overhead. I pressed beneath an ice ledge until its red scanner disappeared.<\/p>\n
The ventilation shaft was where my old survey promised. Its outer grate had rusted into the mountain. I loosened two bolts, squeezed inside, and crawled toward the fortress.<\/p>\n
Twenty minutes later, I dropped into a dark maintenance corridor.<\/p>\n
A guard rounded the corner. I trapped his weapon arm, drove him against the wall, and lowered him unconscious before his radio could fall. I took his access card and reached the server room.<\/p>\n
The stolen defense drive sat inside a hardened reader. I disconnected it, linked my field tablet, and copied the intrusion logs.<\/p>\n
One encrypted folder carried a Sector Seven biometric authorization.<\/p>\n
I opened it.<\/p>\n
COLONEL OWEN BARRETT.<\/p>\n
His command certificate had transmitted Falcon Team\u2019s route, strength, medical roster, and extraction schedule seventy-two hours before the ambush. He had also approved the false intelligence that sent both rescue teams into monitored approaches.<\/p>\n
Barrett had not argued against my mission because it was impossible.<\/p>\n
He had argued because survivors would expose him.<\/p>\n
A private channel opened in my earpiece.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should have listened to me,\u201d Barrett said.<\/p>\n
I stared at the tablet. \u201cYou sent them my route.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI sent them every route.\u201d<\/p>\n
An alarm began pulsing through the fortress.<\/p>\n

Falcon Team was packed into three reinforced rooms. Their commander, Lieutenant Daniel Cruz, had a bandaged thigh and bruises across his face, but he was standing.<\/p>\n
\u201cCaptain Lawson?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m your exit.\u201d<\/p>\n
I opened the cells with the stolen access card. All forty soldiers were alive, though six needed help walking.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere are the rescue teams?\u201d Cruz asked.<\/p>\n

We entered the eastern drainage tunnel in four groups. The passage sloped beneath the fortress, narrow and half-filled with freezing water. Behind us, the enemy response unit reached the holding level.<\/p>\n
The exterior gate should have opened from a manual wheel.<\/p>\n
It moved six inches and jammed.<\/p>\n
Cruz and three soldiers pulled with me. Metal screamed. The gap widened enough for one person at a time.<\/p>\n
The first group crawled through.<\/p>\n
A motion sensor on my tablet showed hostile personnel entering the tunnel.<\/p>\n
Ninety seconds away.<\/p>\n
I gave Cruz the hardened drive.<\/p>\n

I pushed the drive into his hand and struck the emergency release. The gate dropped between us.<\/p>\n
Footsteps thundered through the darkness behind me.<\/p>\n
I armed the demolition charge, turned toward the approaching lights, and started the countdown.<\/p>\n
Ninety seconds.<\/p>\n
I overturned a maintenance cart and took cover behind its steel frame.<\/p>\n
The first pursuers entered the tunnel at a run. I fired into the overhead lights, plunging the passage into darkness, then triggered two smoke canisters. Their thermal optics became useless inside the cloud of heated particles.<\/p>\n
I did not need to defeat them.<\/p>\n
I needed to delay them.<\/p>\n
A guard emerged through the smoke and grabbed my injured shoulder. I drove my head into his face, trapped his arm, and sent him into the freezing water. Another caught my jacket and dragged me backward. I struck the manual valve beside us, releasing a burst of steam that forced him away.<\/p>\n
The timer reached twelve seconds.<\/p>\n
I ran toward a narrow maintenance shaft marked on my paper map.<\/p>\n
Behind me, the response team cleared the smoke.<\/p>\n
Three.<\/p>\n
Two.<\/p>\n
One.<\/p>\n
The charge collapsed the tunnel roof.<\/p>\n
The pressure wave lifted me from the floor and threw me into the shaft. Rock and ice sealed the passage behind me. My ears rang, and a cut above my eyebrow blurred half my vision, but the maintenance ladder remained intact.<\/p>\n
I climbed.<\/p>\n
When I emerged onto the eastern slope, three American rescue helicopters were descending through the storm. Falcon Team had formed a defensive circle around the wounded.<\/p>\n
Cruz saw me and laughed like a man who had forgotten how.<\/p>\n
All forty soldiers boarded.<\/p>\n
Seven hours later, I walked into Sector Seven\u2019s command room with my left arm in a sling and dried blood at my temple. Conversations stopped.<\/p>\n
General Caldwell stared at the soldiers filling the corridor behind me.<\/p>\n
Colonel Barrett moved toward the emergency exit.<\/p>\n
I slammed the hardened drive onto the central table.<\/p>\n
\u201cFalcon Team\u2019s route was transmitted seventy-two hours before the ambush,\u201d I said. \u201cThe authorization carries Colonel Barrett\u2019s biometric certificate.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barrett pointed at me. \u201cShe copied classified files under enemy control. That evidence is contaminated.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cruz entered behind me. \u201cThen explain why you ordered us to change routes twelve minutes before we were surrounded.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barrett reached beneath his uniform coat.<\/p>\n
I caught his wrist before he cleared the sidearm. He twisted my injured arm, but I drove him against the table. Two military police officers seized him, removed the weapon, and secured his hands.<\/p>\n
General Caldwell opened the recovered files.<\/p>\n
Payment records showed that Barrett had been selling northern defense access to a private weapons broker for three years. Falcon Team had discovered an unauthorized relay station, so he leaked their route and urged command to abandon them. The previous rescue teams had been sent through compromised corridors to ensure no witnesses returned.<\/p>\n
Barrett was taken away for court-martial and federal prosecution. The stolen defense network was rebuilt before any regional positions could be exploited.<\/p>\n
Falcon Team returned to duty after medical treatment. The twenty-four members of the failed rescue teams were cleared of every operational accusation and honored by name. Their families finally received the truth.<\/p>\n
A month later, General Caldwell called me into his office.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want you to command a permanent personnel-recovery unit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
I looked at the insignia on his desk. \u201cWith conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n
His eyebrow rose.<\/p>\n
