I dropped my weight and drove backward.<\/p>\n
The man behind me struck the side of my car, and his grip loosened. I turned, pulled his arm across my shoulder, and sent him onto the pavement without letting his head hit the ground.<\/p>\n
The metallic object in the first man\u2019s hand was a folding knife.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d I warned.<\/p>\n
He opened it anyway.<\/p>\n
I kicked a loose shopping basket into his path. He stumbled, and I struck his wrist against the hood. The knife clattered beneath the Civic. I forced him facedown beside it and planted one knee between his shoulders.<\/p>\n
The other two men stopped moving.<\/p>\n
\u201cHands where I can see them,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
The command came out in a voice I had not used in six years.<\/p>\n
Red and blue lights swept across the parked cars. A Cumberland County sheriff\u2019s cruiser turned into the lane and stopped sharply. Sheriff Aaron Blake stepped out with his sidearm lowered but ready.<\/p>\n
