In the black-ops world of long-range interdiction, they call me the Ghost of the Ridge. But out here, in the icy, unforgiving hell of the Siberian borderlands, titles don’t mean a damn thing.

“Vanguard One, we’re pinned down! Goddamn it, we’re pinned!”

Lieutenant Mark Lawson’s panicked whisper bled through my earpiece, instantly cutting through the howl of the -25°C wind. Two kilometers down the valley, embedded in a treacherous gorge, Lawson’s four-man SEAL squad was being slaughtered.

Looking through my thermal optics, the scene was horrific. A rogue mercenary force—at least two dozen hostiles armed with heavy machine guns and RPGs—had clamped down on the canyon walls. They held the high ground, hammering Lawson’s position with unrelenting lead.

“Miller’s hit! He’s bleeding out fast!” Lawson roared, the brutal hammer of a PKM drowning out his voice. “We’re trapped in a crossfire! Need overhead suppressive fire NOW!”

I squeezed the trigger of my MK13 sniper rifle. BOOM. A mercenary gunner on the high ridge dropped dead, but three more immediately swept in to take his place. The blizzard was closing in, cutting visibility down to zero. From two kilometers back, I couldn’t pick them off fast enough to alter their tactical math. In three minutes, the insurgents would flush the SEALs out and wipe them clean.

Rule number one of sniper protocol: Never compromise your high-ground nest.

I ripped my bipod off the dirt, strapped my M4 carbine tight across my plate carrier, and muttered under my breath, “To hell with protocol.”

I hurled myself off the ridge, charging headlong into the roaring snowstorm. My boots slammed into the treacherous ice, my heart hammering against my ribs as I raced toward the sounds of dying men. I wasn’t just running to save a team; I was running from the ghost of my father, an ambushed soldier who never had someone overwatching his back.

I broke through the treeline near the gorge’s edge, blind and breathless.

Suddenly, a heavy force struck me like a freight train. A huge hostile scout leaped from a rock ledge, tackling me violently into the deep snow. My primary rifle slipped away. He scrambled on top of me, his massive weight crushing my chest, pinning my forearms to the frozen earth while raising a jagged survival knife directly over my chest.

Her boots hit the ice, but the trap was already set. What happened in that freezing ravine went deeper than a simple ambush—and Mark Lawson wasn’t telling the whole truth. The rest of the story is below 👇

PART 2

The mercenary’s weight crushed my chest, his blade gleaming under the grey sky as he drove it down toward my throat. Adrenaline surged, sharp and violent. I grabbed his wrist with both hands, stopping the steel inches from my exposed neck. Teeth grit, muscles burning, I fought the brutal force of his downward thrust.

“Die, American rat,” he growled in heavy Russian.

Instead of fighting his weight, I stopped resisting. I shifted my hips violently to the left, using his momentum to roll him over the slippery snow. We hit the ground together, rolling down a short embankment. I broke his grip with a sharp elbow strike directly into his sternum, feeling his ribs yield with a sickening crunch. He gasped for air, and before he could recover, I unholstered my sidearm and put two quick rounds into his chest plate, finishing him instantly.

Chest heaving, I scrambled up, retrieved my weapon, and moved fast. The tactical situation down in the gorge had gone from desperate to catastrophic.

I reached the rocky outer ridge overlooking the SEALs’ defensive pocket. The PKM gunner was walking armor-piercing rounds across Lawson’s barricade. Stone chips slashed Lawson’s face as he desperately put a tourniquet around his medic’s upper thigh.

I popped up from the flank, raising my M4 carbine. Pew-pew-pew! I dropped the PKM operator and his loader in two bursts.

“Lawson! Flank clear! Fall back to the rock crevice now!” I shouted over the comms, sliding down the gravel bank to join their position.

Lawson whirled around, eyes wide with shock behind his tactical goggles as I slid in next to him, snow clinging to my hair. “Vance?! What the hell are you doing down here?! You abandoned high ground!”

“I came to save your asses!” I snapped, grabbing Miller’s rig and helping Lawson drag the groaning medic into the narrow rock crevice.

“We had this under control!” Lawson yelled back, his reaction defensive, almost angry.

That felt wrong. A Lieutenant whose squad was getting wiped out didn’t get furious at unexpected backup.

“They knew we were coming, Rachel,” whispered Miller, clutching his bloody leg, his face pale as death. “It wasn’t a random patrol. They were waiting for the package…”

“Shut up, Miller!” Lawson barked sharply, his hand instantly tightening on his rifle grip.

My instincts screamed. I locked eyes with Lawson. “What package, Mark?”

Before he could answer, an RPG detonated against the rock face directly above us. A shockwave threw us to the ground, showering us with burning shrapnel and heavy debris. The hostiles were closing their circle, advancing down both sides of the canyon walls.

I pulled a tactical tablet from my vest to check the perimeter radar. That’s when I saw it—an encrypted, automated homing ping originating from inside our immediate perimeter. It was transmitting our exact GPS coordinates directly to the mercenaries’ command frequency.

My blood ran colder than the Siberian air. I grabbed Lawson by the tactical vest, yanking him hard against the rock wall.

“There’s a transponder on your gear,” I growled, pointing my sidearm straight at his chest. “You led them right to us. Who the hell are you working for, Lawson?”

Lawson’s eyes flickered with a mix of fear and cold calculation. He didn’t raise his rifle, but he didn’t deny it either. “You don’t understand, Vance. This wasn’t supposed to involve your overwatch unit. It was supposed to be a clean exchange.”

“An exchange? You sold out your own men?!”

“They have my family!” Lawson yelled back, his voice cracking with desperation. “They hijacked my daughter in Munich three days ago! If I didn’t deliver the tactical drive we seized at the border, they kill her!”

The twist hit me like a physical blow. Lawson wasn’t a traitor for money; he was a desperate father being manipulated by the very syndicate we were hunting. But the syndicate had no intention of leaving any witnesses alive—including Lawson.

“They lied to you, Mark,” I said, my voice dropping to a deadly calm. “Look around. They aren’t here to trade. They’re here to erase us.”

A heavy volley of automatic fire peppered our granite cover, signaling the final assault.

If you’ve read this far, don’t hesitate to leave a like and comment before reading part 3. It makes us as happy as reading a complete story! Thank you. 👍❤️

I’m Master Sergeant Rachel Vance.
