\u201cStay,\u201d Beckett said. \u201cYou were eager to discuss experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
He faced the guests. \u201cFour years ago, Lieutenant Commander Maddox\u2014then Lieutenant Claire Rowan\u2014was returning from an operational flight over the Arabian Sea in an F\/A-18F Super Hornet. A compressor failure destroyed her port engine. The failure damaged a hydraulic system and filled part of the cockpit with smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n
The country club vanished from my mind.<\/p>\n
I heard alarms. I felt the aircraft shudder. Behind me, Lieutenant Aaron Cole, my weapons systems officer, had been struck unconscious when a loose panel broke free during the failure. Our fuel was dropping. The carrier deck rose and fell beneath a storm neither of us should have entered.<\/p>\n

He described my first approach. The landing signal officer waved me off when the deck dropped beneath the jet. On the second approach, fuel warnings sounded continuously. I aligned the nose, held the damaged aircraft together, and caught the third wire while the left landing gear began to collapse.<\/p>\n
Aaron left the ship alive.<\/p>\n
\u201cI presented Lieutenant Rowan the Distinguished Flying Cross,\u201d Beckett said. \u201cThe ribbon Mr. Halston just tried to remove from her uniform represents that flight.\u201d<\/p>\n
No one laughed now.<\/p>\n
Brad reached for his coat. \u201cI don\u2019t have to listen to a rehearsed tribute.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen perhaps we should discuss your record,\u201d Beckett replied.<\/p>\n
Brad stopped.<\/p>\n
The admiral acknowledged that Brad had served honorably for two decades as a supply specialist in San Diego. Inventory management kept ships ready and sailors equipped. There was no shame in that work.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe shame,\u201d Beckett said, \u201cis claiming carrier deployments you never completed and belittling logistics personnel while building your reputation on their profession.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brad\u2019s mouth opened, but nothing came out.<\/p>\n
Beckett had reviewed his service history months earlier when Brad applied for a defense advisory council. The application described combat flights, sea-duty assignments, and qualifications that did not exist in his official record. He had been rejected quietly. Tonight, he had repeated the same inventions publicly.<\/p>\n
Brad snatched his coat from the chair. The sleeve caught a tray, sending a glass to the floor. He did not stop to pick it up.<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cAgreed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The doors opened behind us. Admiral Beckett approached carrying a small first-aid kit. He helped secure the loosened ribbon, then handed me a clean dressing.<\/p>\n
\u201cAaron Cole became a flight instructor,\u201d he said. \u201cHe still tells every new crew that the person in the next seat is never expendable.\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled despite myself. \u201cThat sounds like him.\u201d<\/p>\n
