I stood up slowly, stepping into the glaring light of the C-SPAN cameras. “Yes, Congressman. I oversaw the structural audits and verified the supply chain risk assessments. The regional contracts are sound.”<\/p>\n
Albright let out a loud, booming laugh that echoed through the chamber. “Well, why the hell didn’t you just lead with that? If Vera Dunning signed off on this, we are wasting taxpayer time arguing about it. Ms. Dunning is the sharpest mind in the Pentagon. If she says the infrastructure holds, it holds. I move to approve the budget allocations without delay.”<\/p>\n
The room erupted into shocked murmurs. I offered a single, professional nod and sat back down. But the moment my phone connected to the cellular network during the recess, it practically caught fire in my pocket.<\/p>\n

I opened the thread from my father. Vera, what is happening? Are you on C-SPAN?!<\/i> Kyle\u2019s father-in-law just saw the broadcast. I stared at the frantic, desperate words on the screen. The men who had shoved me out of a hotel lobby this morning were now begging me to save their vanity. I calmly turned off my phone, slid it into my purse, and walked out of the Capitol. I didn’t take their private jet. I booked a seat on a commercial Delta flight, took my time navigating the chaotic security lines at Reagan National, and sipped a bad cup of coffee at the gate.<\/p>\n
By the time my taxi pulled up to the sprawling country club where the rehearsal dinner was being held, the sun had long set, and the cocktail hour was entirely over. I walked through the grand double doors wearing the exact same understated navy suit I had worn to the Pentagon hearing. I didn’t bother changing into a gown.<\/p>\n
The moment I stepped into the foyer, my father lunged out from the shadows of the coat check. He grabbed my elbow so hard his fingernails dug through the fabric of my jacket. He yanked me behind a towering floral arrangement, his face pale and slick with sweat.<\/p>\n

When we go in there, you are going to smile. You are going to act like we are a perfectly happy, united family. You will introduce Kyle to the Congressman, and you will ensure Roxanne\u2019s father gets a private moment with him. Do you understand me? You owe this to your brother.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t owe you or Kyle a single thing,” I replied, stepping around him.<\/p>\n
“Vera, stop!” Dad reached for my shoulder again, his face twisting with panicked aggression. “You will not ruin this for us!”<\/p>\n
But before his hand could make contact, a booming voice echoed from the entrance of the grand ballroom.<\/p>\n
“Well, I’ll be damned. The VIP finally arrived.”<\/p>\n

My father froze, his hand still suspended in the air. We both turned toward the ballroom doors. Standing there, flanked by his security detail and staring right at us, was Congressman Garrett Albright.<\/p>\n
Kyle, who had been anxiously hovering near the bar inside, practically sprinted across the room the moment he saw the Congressman looking our way. Kyle shoved past two waiters, extending his hand with a desperate, plastic smile plastered across his face.<\/p>\n
“Congressman Albright! I\u2019m Kyle, the groom. It is such a profound honor to have you\u2014”<\/p>\n
Albright didn’t even break his stride. He walked straight past Kyle, completely ignoring the outstretched hand, leaving my brother standing there like a statue. Albright marched directly up to me, his face breaking into a massive, genuine smile. He reached out and grasped my hand in a firm, warm handshake.<\/p>\n
“Ms. Dunning,” Albright boomed, his voice carrying effortlessly over the sudden, dead silence of the ballroom. Every elite guest, every millionaire, every politician in the room had stopped talking to stare at us. “I was beginning to think you were going to stand me up! When I heard the brilliant mind behind the Pentagon\u2019s new infrastructure strategy was from this family, I told my staff I had to attend. It is a privilege to see you outside the war room.”<\/p>\n
I smiled politely. “It\u2019s good to see you too, Congressman. Thank you for the smooth hearing today.”<\/p>\n
“Smooth because of you,” Albright countered loudly, making sure his voice reached the ears of Roxanne\u2019s father, who was standing frozen by the champagne fountain. Albright turned slightly to address the room, though he kept his hand on my shoulder. “Let me tell you all something. You people in this state are looking at the most powerful woman in defense logistics. Vera Dunning holds the keys to the multi-billion dollar federal contracts that keep this region alive. She has more integrity in her pinky finger than half the politicians in Washington.”<\/p>\n
Albright finally turned his attention to my father, who was staring at me with wide, terrified eyes. “Arthur, isn’t it?” Albright asked, his tone dropping its warmth, replaced by a cold, calculating edge. “You must be incredibly proud to have raised a woman of her caliber. I imagine she is the absolute pride of this family.”<\/p>\n
My father swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. “Uh. Yes. Yes, of course. Vera is… she is our everything.”<\/p>\n
The lie hung in the air, pathetic and transparent. Albright saw right through it. He gave my father a tight, dismissive nod, then turned back to me. “I\u2019ll let you enjoy your evening, Vera. Call my office on Monday. We need to discuss the secondary phases of the procurement budget.”<\/p>\n
With that, Albright turned on his heel and walked out of the country club. He hadn’t spoken to the groom. He hadn’t spoken to the billionaire father-in-law. He had come solely for me.<\/p>\n
The silence in the room was deafening. Suddenly, Roxanne\u2019s father was rushing over, a sycophantic smile on his face, holding out a glass of champagne to me. Other guests began crowding in, the very people who wouldn’t have looked twice at a “lowly civil servant” an hour ago.<\/p>\n
I ignored the champagne. I turned to look at my father and my brother. They looked thoroughly broken, stripped of their vanity and exposed for the shallow opportunists they were.<\/p>\n
“Vera,” my father whispered, stepping forward, his hands trembling. “I… I am so sorry about what I said earlier. About the hotel. About the rehearsal. I didn’t know. Please, you have to understand the pressure we were under\u2014”<\/p>\n
“Stop,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet it cut through him like a knife. “The problem, Dad, isn’t that you didn’t know how much power I had. The problem is that you needed a congressman’s validation to treat your own daughter like a human being. You don’t respect me. You only respect the people I advise.”<\/p>\n
I didn’t wait for his response. I walked past him, leaving him standing in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by the whispers of the elites he so desperately wanted to impress.<\/p>\n
The next morning, I attended the wedding. I sat in the back row, a silent observer. I didn’t speak to my father, I didn’t congratulate Kyle, and I didn’t stay for the reception.
