A camera swung toward us; I heard Vanessa tell him to stop.<\/p>\n His eyes flicked toward the lens, then back to me. \u201cYou wanted your moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n His right shoulder moved.<\/p>\n There was no bell, no agreement, and no time left to explain.<\/p>\n PART 3<\/strong><\/p>\n I moved as his fist came toward my face.<\/p>\n The next few seconds were ugly and close. His knuckles grazed my cheek. We collided, my boots slid, and I heard a camera strike the floor somewhere behind him.<\/p>\n When we landed, he was facedown on the mat with me controlling one arm. Reese dropped beside us and kept his other hand where we could see it.<\/p>\n \u201cStop moving,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n Dane bucked once, hard. Pain shot through my shoulder. I adjusted my position and held him without adding pressure.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s over.\u201d<\/p>\n Keegan knelt where Dane could see him. \u201cListen to her.\u201d<\/p>\n For a moment, I thought he wouldn\u2019t. For the first time that afternoon, somebody from Dane\u2019s team seemed willing to carry the full weight of a choice.<\/p>\n The investigation established what the call sheet had suggested. Vanessa had pitched the confrontation; Dane had approved it in messages Tyler provided. They expected an angry refusal they could edit into a promotional clip. Nobody at the base had agreed to a challenge.<\/p>\n The general\u2019s arrival hadn\u2019t been a rescue arranged for me. His scheduled observation had simply brought him through the door at the moment Dane grabbed my wrist.<\/p>\n Hale\u2019s presence had given my refusal an authority Dane should never have needed.
