She doesn’t live here. She doesn’t know anything.\u201d<\/p>\n The second officer looked at Mom. \u201cMa’am, would you speak with me over here?\u201d<\/p>\n Dennis answered for her. \u201cShe’s staying with me.\u201d<\/p>\n The officer waited until Mom met his eyes. \u201cIt’s your choice.\u201d<\/p>\n She moved away from Dennis and toward the quiet corridor.<\/p>\n I stayed by the books, keeping my hands visible. I told the other officer about the keys, the wrist, and Dennis following us. The receptionist described what she had witnessed.<\/p>\n Dennis kept returning to his rank. Dennis stared at my uniform in the photograph.<\/p>\n Then I opened the small presentation case Mom handed me from the shelf.<\/p>\n Two silver stars caught the kitchen light.<\/p>\n PART 3<\/strong><\/p>\n Dennis straightened before he seemed to realize he was doing it. His eyes moved from the stars to my face.<\/p>\n \u201cRear admiral?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n For the first time since I arrived, he had nothing ready to say.<\/p>\n Mom stood beside the table instead of retreating to the sink.<\/p>\n \u201cShe commands sailors,\u201d she said. \u201cShe makes decisions people depend on. And I let you call her lost because it was easier than arguing with you.\u201d<\/p>\n Her voice broke on the last few words.<\/p>\n I closed the case. \u201cMom, you don’t have to prove anything about me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI know. I need to say what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n Dennis pulled his chair back. \u201cWell, Admiral, you understand discipline. Surely you can see\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI saw you take her keys. I saw you hold her wrist. Your rank doesn’t explain either one.\u201d<\/p>\n He looked toward the hallway as the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n Ruth had arrived. Mom let her in, then returned to the kitchen carrying the folder from the diner.<\/p>\n \u201cI met with an attorney,\u201d she said. \u201cI’m ending the marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou’ll regret that when you see the bills.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI’ve been paying them.\u201d<\/p>\n She placed the joint account statement on the table. Dennis looked at it, then away.<\/p>\n Mom didn’t ask him to explain every transfer. She told him future financial questions would go through their attorneys.<\/p>\n He tried another approach. \u201cMarianne. We can talk after your daughter leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe’re talking now.\u201d<\/p>\n I remained beside the counter. Every part of me wanted to help her finish the sentences. I kept quiet.<\/p>\n Dennis eventually agreed to stay with a friend while the lawyers worked out the arrangements. He packed an overnight bag, moving loudly through the house. Ruth stayed with Mom. I waited in the hallway without blocking him.<\/p>\n At the front door, he turned back. \u201cYou think having an admiral for a daughter means you can do whatever you want?\u201d<\/p>\n Mom held out her hand. \u201cMy car keys.\u201d<\/p>\n He dropped them into her palm.<\/p>\n She closed the door behind him. Then she stood there a long time, holding them.<\/p>\n The next days were practical and tiring. Her attorney helped address occupancy, accounts, and the separation. Once she had exclusive use of the house established, she arranged to change the locks. She reviewed her credit records and secured the accounts that belonged to her.<\/p>\n There was no single afternoon when twenty-four months of shrinking herself disappeared.<\/p>\n She still apologized when she asked me to move my shoes. She lowered the television whenever a truck passed outside.<\/p>\n I stayed through the week of leave I had arranged, then called every evening after returning to duty. Ruth kept coming for coffee. Mom went back to her volunteer shifts.<\/p>\n Dennis sent one message asking whether I could speak to someone about the VA incident.<\/p>\n I told him to address it through the ordinary process.<\/p>\n He never asked again.<\/p>\n The divorce became final months later.
