Hollis nodded slowly.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo that\u2019s why we never saw her name.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dylan rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n
Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n

His jaw clenched.<\/p>\n

Dylan stared at my sleeve.<\/p>\n
I had a long pale scar running above my elbow. He had seen it at family cookouts and accepted my explanation that it came from \u201cwork.\u201d<\/p>\n
He whispered, \u201cThat scar?\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
General Reeves said, \u201cMajor Carter refused evacuation until her crew and every recovered Marine had been transferred to the follow-on aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n

The word hurt him.<\/p>\n
I let it.<\/p>\n

General Reeves was still on speaker.<\/p>\n

Dylan looked horrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cExercise-level recovery procedures,\u201d I said. \u201cNot you personally.\u201d<\/p>\n
The general added, \u201cAnd because Lance Corporal Carter is her brother, his individual evaluation will be handled separately. No conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hollis nodded approvingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked through the glass toward the training floor.<\/p>\n

He nodded slowly.<\/p>\n
Months later, parts of the Copper Ridge citation were formally released, though much of the operation remained classified.<\/p>\n
My family finally understood why I had stayed quiet.<\/p>\n
But that was never the lesson I wanted Dylan to remember.<\/p>\n
My rank did not make throwing my badge wrong.<\/p>\n
My call sign did not make grabbing my arm wrong.<\/p>\n
And a general\u2019s phone call did not make me worthy of respect.<\/p>\n
I had been worthy of it before anyone said \u201cNightfall Seven.\u201d<\/p>\n
So was everyone else standing on that gravel.<\/p>\n
