Laura stared at him. \u201cGrant, you told me Vanguard was just an internal nickname.\u201d<\/p>\n
His head snapped toward her.<\/p>\n
\u201cStay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n
He grabbed my credential wallet off the table.<\/p>\n
I rose immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cPut it down.\u201d<\/p>\n
He held it behind his back.<\/p>\n

My father stood too.<\/p>\n

Grant shoved his chair aside, bumping my father hard enough to make him stagger against the china cabinet.<\/p>\n
I caught Dad by the forearm.<\/p>\n
That changed the temperature in the room.<\/p>\n
I stepped between them.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant froze.<\/p>\n
For the first time all evening, he seemed to understand that I wasn\u2019t playing along.<\/p>\n
He dropped the wallet onto the table.<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant pointed at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. It\u2019s the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
He paced toward the fireplace, rubbing both hands over his face.<\/p>\n
Then he stopped.<\/p>\n
\u201cRebecca, listen. Vanguard Corridor isn\u2019t even classified in the way you\u2019re making it sound.\u201d<\/p>\n
I watched him carefully.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI never said it was classified.\u201d<\/p>\n
His eyes flicked toward mine.<\/p>\n
The room went silent again.<\/p>\n
I continued.<\/p>\n

Grant swallowed.<\/p>\n

Grant\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

He said nothing.<\/p>\n

Grant slammed his palm onto the table.<\/p>\n

Dad shouted.<\/p>\n
Laura gasped.<\/p>\n

Grant squeezed once, then seemed to realize what he was doing.<\/p>\n
I peeled his fingers off my arm and stepped back.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo more touching.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stared at me, breathing hard.<\/p>\n
Then his phone buzzed on the table.<\/p>\n
He looked at the screen.<\/p>\n
His face changed.<\/p>\n
He snatched it up.<\/p>\n
I saw only the caller name before he turned it away.<\/p>\n
Daniel Kessler.<\/p>\n
I knew that name.<\/p>\n
Kessler was Aegis Meridian\u2019s director of secure systems, one of the people already scheduled for my Tuesday interview.<\/p>\n
Grant declined the call.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m taking my property upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said the company secure environment was slowing the proposal team down. We had deadlines.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow did the files leave the company system?\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant pressed both palms against the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cKessler gave me an encrypted drive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Laura whispered, \u201cYou brought that into our house?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought it was approved.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen why did you hide the laptops?\u201d<\/p>\n
He had no answer.<\/p>\n
That was the real break in him.<\/p>\n
Not my credential.<\/p>\n

Her question.<\/p>\n

He did not wear the expensive watch.<\/p>\n
I came straight from duty again, this time in a newer uniform.<\/p>\n
He looked at the repaired old jacket folded over my chair.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou still have that thing?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n
Then, quietly, he said, \u201cI was cruel to you because I needed everyone in the room to think I was important.\u201d<\/p>\n
Laura looked at him.<\/p>\n
I waited.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n
I believed him because he didn\u2019t add an excuse.<\/p>\n
I touched the faded cuff.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis uniform was never expensive,\u201d I said. \u201cIt was just earned.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant looked down.<\/p>\n
And for once, he understood the difference.<\/p>\n
