\u201cI didn\u2019t say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were thinking loudly.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Cerberus team was closing.<\/p>\n
We had no clean route down and no rescue aircraft coming. Even if one launched, the wrong people might track it.<\/p>\n
I looked across the valley.<\/p>\n
A massive hanging shelf clung to the opposite slope above the approach Cerberus was using.<\/p>\n
Luke saw my eyes settle there.<\/p>\n
\u201cAvery.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need distance.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is a terrible sentence when you say it like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
I studied the mountain, then lowered the rifle.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo direct engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Luke understood.<\/p>\n
His expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the device?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cStill there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Luke checked the valley.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can\u2019t leave it.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hated that he was right.<\/p>\n
We descended by a longer route and reached the lower basin after dark.<\/p>\n
The trade site had become a wreck of abandoned vehicles, scattered equipment, and dead communications gear. We approached carefully.<\/p>\n
Volkov was gone.<\/p>\n
The steel case wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

He lunged toward Luke, driving a shoulder into him. Luke hit the side of the vehicle and lost his footing. I stepped in, caught Finch across the upper body, and all three of us crashed into the snow.<\/p>\n
Finch drove an elbow backward and clipped my cheek.<\/p>\n
Pain flashed through my face.<\/p>\n
Luke grabbed his coat. Finch twisted free and reached toward the equipment near the steel case.<\/p>\n

This time Luke pinned his shoulders while I forced his hand away from the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeither do you,\u201d Luke said. \u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ward\u2019s voice returned.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I secured his hands while Luke checked the case without disturbing it.<\/p>\n
