\u201cI said no. Put Staff Sergeant Lucas Moreno\u2019s name on the release. He and his Marines bought every civilian on that convoy time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I ended the call.<\/p>\n

Cross almost smiled.<\/p>\n

Then Pike\u2019s phone buzzed.<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned the screen toward Cross.<\/p>\n

A hospital security image showed a man in blue scrubs entering through a service door.<\/p>\n

Cross stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pike said, \u201cNobody on staff.\u201d<\/p>\n

My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n

When the doors opened on three, alarms were already sounding.<\/p>\n

Barrett came storming toward us.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s Moreno?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn his room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreno looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou came back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five minutes later, Pike reported that the intruder had escaped through a loading dock.<\/p>\n

But he had dropped something in the stairwell.<\/p>\n

A folded page.<\/p>\n

Cross handed it to me with gloves.<\/p>\n

It was a printed hospital transfer schedule.<\/p>\n

Moreno\u2019s name was circled.<\/p>\n

Barrett went pale.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat document came from my office.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cross looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho has access?\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrett swallowed.<\/p>\n

The name was Major Evan Sloan, deputy director of patient movement.<\/p>\n

Barrett stared at the screen.<\/p>\n

Cross answered. \u201cWe believe Sloan copied movement data before Colonel Hale\u2019s flight left Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrett finally looked at me differently.<\/p>\n

Not because of my rank.<\/p>\n

Because he understood why I had kept quiet while he treated me like a problem.<\/p>\n

Sloan was arrested twenty minutes later near a staff parking garage. NCIS later determined he had been selling protected travel information through an intermediary. He had not expected the overseas attack to become public, and when Moreno survived, he tried to determine what the sergeant remembered.<\/p>\n

The man in scrubs had been sent to obtain Moreno\u2019s chart and move him to a false diagnostic appointment.<\/p>\n

He never reached him.<\/p>\n

By evening, Moreno was transferred to a secured military ward.<\/p>\n

I went with him.<\/p>\n

This time Barrett opened the door himself.<\/p>\n

Three days later, I was sitting beside Moreno when the hallway suddenly filled with dress uniforms.<\/p>\n

He frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lieutenant General Charles Whitaker, commander of Marine Forces Atlantic, entered carrying a small presentation case.<\/p>\n

Barrett\u2019s head turned sharply.<\/p>\n

That surprised me.<\/p>\n

Not the apology.<\/p>\n

The change.<\/p>\n

He nodded and left.<\/p>\n

Moreno watched him go.<\/p>\n
