We transferred Mercer onto the bed. This time he did not fight. The call sign had broken through whatever place his mind had been trapped in, but only for seconds.<\/p>\n

As Grant worked, I noticed a man standing outside the glass doors in a dark Navy uniform.<\/p>\n

Captain Adrian Voss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I knew the name. Deputy director of a classified naval intelligence task force.<\/p>\n

When I told him about the drive, he stopped me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. But if Mercer told you to hide it while bleeding out, assume somebody wants it badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

A noise sounded outside the staff room.<\/p>\n

Footsteps.<\/p>\n

I ended the call.<\/p>\n

Voss stood in the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re still here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy patient is in ICU.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not your patient anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not how nursing works.\u201d<\/p>\n

His gaze dropped toward my scrub pocket.<\/p>\n

I folded my arms.<\/p>\n

He stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdmiral Mercer was involved in a sensitive investigation. Anything he carried belongs to national security.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen send me the proper chain-of-custody paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, anger flashed across his face.<\/p>\n

His hand closed around my upper arm.<\/p>\n

Not enough to injure me.<\/p>\n

Enough to intimidate.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you understand who you\u2019re dealing with?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at his hand.<\/p>\n

I grabbed the rolling supply stand and shoved it between us.<\/p>\n

He crashed into it, lost his balance, and struck the floor on one knee.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecurity!\u201d I yelled.<\/p>\n

He caught my ankle before I could reach the door.<\/p>\n

I went down hard, twisted onto my side, and kicked his hand away.<\/p>\n

Then Mercer moved.<\/p>\n

Barely conscious, fresh from surgery, he reached across the bed and hit the nurse-call button repeatedly.<\/p>\n

The alarm screamed through the unit.<\/p>\n

Brooks lunged toward me one last time.<\/p>\n

I seized the metal oxygen-bottle carrier beside the wall\u2014not the cylinder itself\u2014and drove the frame into his path. His shin hit it, and he fell forward.<\/p>\n

Two hospital security officers burst through the door seconds later.<\/p>\n

They pinned him to the floor.<\/p>\n

Brooks shouted, \u201cYou don\u2019t know what she\u2019s protecting!\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the guards looked at me.<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n

That part was true.<\/p>\n

Then Voss appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

Too fast.<\/p>\n

Far too fast.<\/p>\n

He took in Brooks on the floor, the syringe under the bed, and my face.<\/p>\n

The ICU charge nurse stared at him.<\/p>\n

Voss\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

I pulled out my phone.<\/p>\n

Voss backed toward the door.<\/p>\n

Then the elevator opened.<\/p>\n

Four NCIS agents entered with a Navy rear admiral I recognized from television: Rear Admiral Susan Barrett<\/strong>, director of the investigative task force overseeing the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaptain Adrian Voss,\u201d the lead agent said, \u201cstep away from the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voss looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have no idea what\u2019s on that drive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what makes you dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. That\u2019s what makes me a nurse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agents took him into custody.<\/p>\n

Later, I learned what had happened.<\/p>\n

Mercer had discovered that someone inside his intelligence task force was passing restricted submarine-maintenance schedules and deployment-support information to an overseas broker. The titanium drive contained audit records, payment trails, and copies of communications already collected for investigators.<\/p>\n

Voss had discovered Mercer was preparing to expose him.<\/p>\n

The explosion that injured Mercer had not been an accident.<\/p>\n

Brooks had been assigned to recover the drive and make sure Mercer never woke up to identify anyone.<\/p>\n

What neither man expected was that a delirious admiral would trust an emergency nurse because she knew one forgotten call sign.<\/p>\n

Three days later, Mercer opened his eyes in ICU.<\/p>\n

I was checking his monitor when he said, \u201cYou\u2019re loud.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly dropped the clipboard.<\/p>\n

He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat name belonged to a version of me I thought I\u2019d buried.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI figured.\u201d<\/p>\n

His hand trembled slightly against the blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I woke up in that trauma room, I wasn\u2019t there. I was twenty years younger. I could hear people I couldn\u2019t save.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled a chair beside the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were injured and confused. Your brain was trying to make sense of danger.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you brought me back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all did.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n

Then he asked, \u201cThe drive?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere it belongs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVoss?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso where he belongs.\u201d<\/p>\n

That got another faint smile.<\/p>\n

Weeks later, I received a formal commendation from the hospital and a handwritten note from Mercer.<\/p>\n

It did not mention classified operations.<\/p>\n

It contained only one sentence:<\/p>\n

Thank you for remembering that the patient was still in there.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I kept that note in my locker.<\/p>\n

Because that night reminded me why I became a nurse.<\/p>\n

Sometimes saving a life means knowing which medication to give.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it means stopping someone from hurting himself.<\/p>\n

And sometimes it means finding the one word that reaches a frightened human being when rank, uniforms, and authority no longer can.<\/p>\n
