Dust swallowed the road. A second burst hit the vehicle behind us.

Mateo was at the turret, singing twenty minutes earlier; now he lay motionless, and I couldn’t get an answer when I called his name.

Doc ran forward to help the wounded and went down in the exposed stretch between two vehicles. His leg was badly injured. I could see him trying to drag himself, unable to clear the road.

Our radio traffic was chaos, with everyone calling out positions and asking where the medevac could land.

I left cover because I couldn’t leave him there.

I crossed the exposed ground, reached his vest, and pulled him into a shallow irrigation ditch.

He was heavy with body armor and medical equipment. Moving him meant dragging, stopping, lifting, and dragging again, each foot taking longer than the last.

“You kept apologizing,” I told Caleb softly.

“For bleeding all over your uniform,” he said.

A few veterans smiled through wet eyes.

We had to get to an evacuation point near a grape-drying shed. The ditch twisted past broken walls and dry vines.

By the time we reached the last obstruction, my arms were trembling and Doc could barely stand.

The earth wall was about seven feet high.

Two soldiers waited on the far side, but couldn’t reach him from where they stood.

“I couldn’t lift you,” I said. “So I knelt in the ditch with my back against the wall. He’d become a physician assistant at a veterans’ clinic nearby. He’d come to the VFW to meet friends and overheard the story from across the room.

“There’s something you don’t know,” he said. “That night, I could hear you calling Mateo on the radio while you pulled me. She said she’d listen whenever you were ready.”

Two nights later, I brought the unopened envelope to Caleb’s kitchen. His wife made tea and gave us privacy.

The paper was creased from fifteen years in my duffel, but his handwriting was still clear.

He’d written that I’d shouted Mateo’s name more times than he could count. That I’d tried to reach the turret before another soldier pulled me toward Doc.

That the medic’s survival wasn’t evidence that I cared less about the man we’d lost.

The letter ended:

“You carried me home, Evie. He isn’t.”

We spoke for almost an hour. She asked me to send a photograph of the convoy, and I promised I would.

For the first time, remembering Mateo felt like remembering a person instead of only a loss.

I mailed Rosa a photograph of him grinning beside our vehicle, a letter describing his ordinary kindness, and a recording of one song he used to butcher.

She called a few days later to say she had played it twice.

Her laugh sounded so much like his that I had to sit down.

A week later, Graham asked to meet at the veterans’ memorial.

He looked sober and exhausted.

“I drove the last truck,” he admitted. “I heard every call, but I was terrified. I stayed behind the wheel. When people asked what happened afterward, I started telling the story as if I’d done what you did. After a while, they believed it. He speaks about being the one who needed help.

I talk about Mateo’s songs, and the seven-foot wall.

We tell the same story from two sides, leaving space for the people who can no longer speak.

What do you think of this story?
