A fast-moving storm upstream transformed a manageable creek into a violent surge. Our safety team began pulling trainees toward the bank, but a fallen tree swept across the channel and trapped a young private named Dylan Shore beneath its branches.

“Shore can’t swim!” somebody screamed.

I was already in the water.

The current dragged my boots out from under me. I grabbed a root, fought my way toward him, and found his face disappearing beneath the surface. I hauled his chin up. He coughed once, then screamed as the tree shifted.

“Look at me, Dylan. Breathe when I tell you.”

“Sergeant, leave me! It’s pulling you down!”

“Not happening.”

A floating log slammed into my left leg. I heard the crack through the water. The pain was so sudden I nearly let go, but Shore’s head dropped and I caught him again. My leg was pinned; his shoulders were trapped. I couldn’t move either of us.

“Four!” I shouted over the current. “Four!”

It was the count our rescue team had been using for the remaining trainees. If they heard the number, they would know who was still missing—and roughly where the voice was coming from.

A light swung across the bank. Men shouted back. I pressed Shore’s face higher while black water rose to my mouth.

“Don’t close your eyes,” I told him. “I haven’t counted you home yet.”

Pruitt was one of the trainees who helped guide rescuers toward us. They pulled Shore free before they could lift the log from my crushed leg. Months later I received the Soldier’s Medal. I learned to walk without a cane, but never without remembering.

Back at Fort Stewart, Pruitt’s voice dragged me into the present.

“Thirty-one of us signed it,” he whispered. “You really didn’t know?”

“Signed what?”

“The letter to Command Sergeant Major Gaines. We asked for you.”

My breath stalled.

After more than a year of rotating leaders, Second Platoon had written directly to the brigade’s senior enlisted adviser. Pruitt had gathered thirty-one signatures. Gaines had checked the request through the chain of command, and the battalion had approved my assignment. The petition was attached to my transfer packet.

Page six.

Maddox had mocked the one person his soldiers had specifically asked to follow.

Before I could answer, a runner hurried toward us. “Sergeant Varga? The command sergeant major’s at headquarters. She wants you and Captain Maddox. Right now.”

Inside the captain’s office, CSM Patrice Gaines stood behind his desk holding the opened packet. Maddox was rigid beside her.

“Captain,” Gaines said, “read the letter aloud. Every signature. Then read the citation clipped behind it.”

Maddox looked at me, then at the final page. His face lost its color.

At the bottom of the rescue report was a name he knew all too well: Private Dylan Shore—his own platoon’s thirty-fourth soldier.

PART 3 — COUNT EVERY ONE

“Private Shore?” Maddox whispered. “He’s in my company.”

“Exactly,” Command Sergeant Major Gaines said. “And you’ve been dismissing the person who kept him alive.”

Maddox stared at the attached citation. I watched him read the description of the flooded creek, the pinned leg, the struggling trainee. He swallowed hard when he reached the sentence about my refusing to release Shore even as rescuers ordered me to protect myself.

“I thought she was an inexperienced transfer,” he said.

“You thought,” Gaines replied. “You didn’t read.”

She pushed the petition toward him. “Thirty-one signatures. Not thirty-one soldiers rebelling against you. Thirty-one asking for a leader who’d already earned their trust. Your battalion commander approved the assignment after reviewing this letter and her record.”

He turned the pages. At the top was Pruitt’s name. Below it were thirty more, including Shore’s.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Maddox asked me.

“You had the folder in your hand, sir.”

His eyes shut briefly.

Gaines made him review the weekend punishment and leave decisions with his first sergeant and battalion commander. By that afternoon, the extra detail and blanket restrictions were rescinded. She required him to examine why he’d treated a personnel packet as an inconvenience and a whole platoon as an enemy.

I expected him to resent me for it.

Instead, the following Monday, he stood before Bravo Company without a speechwriter, a microphone, or an excuse.

“I made a judgment based on Sergeant Varga’s appearance,” he said. “I embarrassed her publicly. I punished Second Platoon for showing respect I didn’t understand. All three decisions were wrong.”

Ninety soldiers listened without shifting.

He faced me. “Sergeant First Class Varga, I apologize. You deserved better from your commander.”

I saluted. “I accept your apology, sir.”

When he returned it, his hand shook slightly. So did mine.

An apology didn’t instantly rebuild trust. He still had to listen when Pruitt raised concerns, back my training plans when they were sound, and admit when they needed changing. I still had to show him that I wasn’t looking for revenge. We worked at it, one briefing and one difficult decision at a time.

Near the end of the month, Second Platoon conducted a supervised rope crossing at the Canoochee River. The current was stronger than we’d hoped, but within the limits established by our safety team. Maddox stood on the far bank beside the medics and rescue personnel.

“Three points of contact!” I shouted. “Don’t rush. Look at the soldier behind you.”

The first private reached shore. “One!” I called.

The next. “Two!”

At twenty-five, Maddox began counting with me from across the water. He didn’t raise his voice to take command away. He raised it so every soldier could hear the count over the river.

“Thirty-two!” we shouted together.

“Thirty-three!”

The last soldier struggled over a slick rock. I reached out, gripped his forearm, and steadied him. His boot found solid ground.

“Thirty-four!”

Private Dylan Shore pulled his hand free and looked at my leg. “You always count to the end, Sergeant?”

“Every time.”

Maddox joined us as the platoon gathered its equipment. He watched Shore walk away before speaking.

“I was the youngest captain in my previous battalion,” he told me. “Every mistake felt like proof I didn’t belong. I started making sure nobody could question me first.”

“That must’ve been exhausting,” I said.

“It was.
