PART 2

His fingers closed around the frame. I turned my head just enough to keep him from pulling the glasses free. “Careful,” I said. “They’re prescription.” Thornton grabbed my jaw. “Don’t play with me.” “You’re the one who locked the door.” Someone pounded outside. “Chief!” Brenda shouted. “Open the door.” Thornton ignored her, picked up his body camera, and reached for the power switch. “You really think cameras save you?” “Cameras save facts,” I said. The pounding came again. “Who are you?” Thornton demanded. “Aaron Cole.” “I know the name.” “No. You know the cover.” Then a man in the hallway shouted, “State investigators! Open the door!” Thornton froze. I watched him calculate his options. He chose evidence destruction. He lunged for my glasses. I twisted sideways, knocking my chair into the wall. He caught my shoulder, and we crashed against the table. My cuffed hands were trapped between us, so I drove my forearm upward to make space. He stumbled, seized the glasses, and ripped them from my face.

He held them up. A tiny green light blinked at the hinge. “What is this?” “A state evidence transmitter,” I said. “Live mirrored storage. Breaking it changes nothing.” His face emptied. I sat upright. “Deputy Director Aaron Cole, State Bureau of Professional Standards. Former FBI Civil Rights Division. You just arrested the lead investigator in a three-year corruption probe.” Thornton stared at me. For the first time all morning, he looked genuinely afraid. Then he smashed the glasses against the wall. The door burst inward. Ray Coleman came through first—not in his café apron, but in a navy STATE INVESTIGATIONS jacket. Two agents followed. Brenda stood behind them with her body camera still running. Thornton backed away. “This is a misunderstanding.” Ray looked at the broken glasses. “That’s destruction of state evidence.” “He attacked me!” Thornton shouted. Brenda stepped forward. “No. He didn’t.” Thornton wheeled on her. “Think carefully about your next sentence.” Brenda raised her chin. “I already did. I copied six months of body-camera deletion logs before you locked me out of the evidence system.”

Even I hadn’t known that. Brenda was the anonymous source who had been sending encrypted records to our office for nearly a year. Thornton understood it too. Rage replaced fear. He shoved Ray into the doorframe and reached for his sidearm. “Gerald, don’t!” I shouted. Brenda grabbed his wrist. Ray slammed Thornton’s gun hand against the wall, and the weapon clattered to the floor. Thornton drove his shoulder into Ray, broke free, and bolted into the hallway.

We chased him through records. He overturned a cart, scattering files, then sprinted toward the evidence room. I knew what he wanted: the complaint archive. Fifteen years of buried reports. Brenda shouted, “He has the master key!” Thornton reached the steel door and jammed a key into the lock. Alarms began screaming. He looked back at me. “You have no idea how many people go down if that room opens.” The lock clicked. He disappeared inside and slammed the steel door behind him.

PART 3

I hit the evidence-room door seconds after Thornton locked it. “Gerald! Step away from the files.” No answer. Then I smelled smoke. Through the reinforced window, I saw him ripping archive boxes from shelves and dumping papers into a metal trash bin. He struck a lighter. “He’s burning complaints!” Brenda yelled. I pounded the glass. “Thornton, those records are duplicated.” It was only partly true, but he didn’t know that. His hand froze. Ray grabbed the emergency key from the station commander. The door opened six inches before Thornton rammed a shelving cart into it. We pushed. “Three, two, one!” Ray shouted. We forced the gap wide enough for Brenda to slip through. Thornton swung the trash-bin lid at her. She ducked and caught his forearm. I grabbed him from behind. He slammed me into a shelf, but I held on. Ray seized his other arm, and together we forced him to the floor. “You’re finished,” Thornton snarled. I locked a cuff around his wrist. “No. Your cover is.”

Then my phone rang. Deputy Mayor Elaine Foster. I put it on speaker. “Gerald?” she said. “Tell me you cleared the archive.” Nobody answered. “Gerald, the old complaints connect my office to every settlement. If the state sees them, we’re both done.” Thornton closed his eyes. Brenda gave a bitter laugh. “Deputy Mayor Foster,” I said, “this is Aaron Cole with the State Bureau of Professional Standards. Thank you for clarifying the chain of command.” The line went dead. By noon, investigators had secured the station. Servers were imaged, lockers sealed, and every complaint file photographed. The pattern was worse than expected. For fifteen years, Thornton had buried excessive-force complaints, altered arrest narratives, pressured officers to rewrite reports, and routed civil-rights complaints into a dead-end review process. Foster’s office had approved settlements and budget transfers that kept the pattern away from state auditors. The café arrest had not created the case. It completed it. Norah’s recorder captured Thornton threatening customers. Ray’s equipment captured the arrest. Brenda’s body camera captured the fabrication. My glasses transmitted the interview live to an off-site server.

The next morning, Thornton sat in the conference room where he had intimidated officers for years. State investigators, federal civil-rights attorneys, and city counsel faced him. I placed a thick binder on the table. “Fifteen years,” I said. “False arrests, altered evidence logs, retaliation, buried complaints.” He stared at it. “I want my lawyer.” “You should.” Foster resigned that day. Thornton was suspended and later faced charges tied to civil-rights violations, false arrest, obstruction, and evidence destruction. Ridgemont accepted a court-enforced reform plan requiring independent complaint review, strict body-camera retention, outside audits, retraining, and state monitoring.

Weeks later, I returned to Common Grounds without a wire, camera, or cover story. Norah set down my coffee. “Still black?” “Still black.” Brenda walked in wearing plain clothes; Ray followed. For the first time in months, nobody was pretending. Norah asked, “Was it worth letting him put you in cuffs?” I thought about the people whose complaints had vanished and the officers threatened into silence. “The cuffs weren’t the point,” I said. “The record was.” I lifted my cup. “And this time, the record survived.”
