The police locked the front door while I stared at Dorothy\u2019s phone. Dad looked exhausted. \u201cTell me now,\u201d I said. He rubbed his jaw. \u201cWalter Mitchell survived that ambush because I ignored an order to leave him behind.\u201d Dorothy whispered, \u201cMy father told me that.\u201d Dad shook his head. \u201cHe never told you who gave the order. Three months later, Dorothy renamed the place Mitchell-Owens Diner, after both men from that rice paddy\u2014one who was carried and one who refused to leave him behind. Dad complained about the sign, then quietly started eating there every Saturday.<\/p>\n
