PART 2

Every face turned toward me. Camille spoke first. “Well, that’s convenient.” Adrian snapped, “Shut up.” Matteo’s guard slid my phone across the table. I didn’t touch it. “Check the transmission record. If that message originated from this device, I’ll leave in handcuffs. If it didn’t, someone cloned my number.” Victor Sloan leaned back. “Still talking like a lawyer.” “Still hiding behind other people like a coward?” I shot back. Marcus moved to the security terminal. Camille edged toward the door. “Nobody moves,” Matteo warned. Marcus studied the log. “Message hit the local relay at 9:31, but Elena’s phone was inside the Faraday lockbox by 9:18.” The room changed. Adrian looked at Camille. She folded her arms. “That proves nothing about me.” “No,” I said. “But your new bracelet might.” Her hand jerked over it. Marcus approached. “Don’t touch me,” she snapped. “Then remove it yourself,” I said. “Because that isn’t jewelry. It’s a proximity transmitter.” Camille bolted. Marcus caught her wrist, and she drove an elbow into his chest. Adrian grabbed her shoulder; she clawed his face and twisted free. At that second, the lights went out. A suppressed shot cracked through the room. I dropped behind the table as glass shattered above me. A man in black rushed from the service corridor and reached for me. I swung a heavy water pitcher into his forearm. His weapon skidded away. He seized my coat and yanked me forward. Pain shot through my abdomen. “Get off her!” Adrian tackled him. They crashed into a chair. Marcus kicked the gun away, and Matteo’s guards pinned the attacker face-down. Emergency lights came on. Blood ran from a cut near Adrian’s eyebrow. My stomach tightened hard enough to make me gasp. “Elena?” he said. “I’m fine.” “That didn’t sound fine.” “Worry about the assassin who got through your security.”

Marcus tore the bracelet from Camille’s wrist. Beneath the clasp was a transmitter. One of Matteo’s men pulled a burner phone from the attacker. The last message read: SHE ENTERS EAST HALL. USE E.V. NUMBER. EXTRACT BEFORE VOTE. Sender initials: T.V. Victor Sloan gave a humorless laugh. “Looks like the Vales have a problem.” Adrian went still. Only three senior Vales were in the building. One was Adrian. One was his elderly mother. The third was Thomas Vale, Adrian’s uncle, the man who had trained him and spent twenty years waiting for power that never became his. Thomas rose at the far end of the table. “Initials prove nothing.” “Maybe,” I said. “But Camille’s bracelet does. That model is issued by Vale Executive Security. I reviewed the procurement contract.” Camille’s face collapsed. “Thomas, you said no one would get hurt.” Adrian stared at his uncle. “You recruited her?” Thomas’s expression hardened. “I corrected a weak succession.” Then he moved. He grabbed me from behind, locked one arm across my chest, and pressed a compact pistol against my ribs. Adrian froze. Marcus raised his hands. “Uncle, don’t.” Thomas dragged me toward the side doors. “You should have signed your divorce, disappeared quietly, and stayed in New York.” I forced myself to breathe. “This was never about Camille.” “No,” Thomas whispered. “She was just the door.” He backed us into the dark corridor. “You were the lock I had to break.”

PART 3

Thomas dragged me toward the service stairs, the pistol digging into my ribs. My son kicked hard, and I focused on that movement instead of the gun. Behind us, Adrian said, “Take me. Let her go.” Thomas laughed. “That’s always been your problem. You confuse possession with loyalty.” I answered, “And you confuse patience with intelligence.” His grip tightened. “Careful.” “Why? You can’t kill me yet.” He stopped. “You need the original Compact appendix,” I said. “The one you tried to replace with a revision giving Victor Sloan control over the western accounts. My signature is on the witness page. Without me, Matteo can prove it’s fraudulent.” Then Matteo’s voice carried from the conference room. “She mailed me the original yesterday.” Thomas’s breathing changed.

Adrian stepped closer. “It’s over.” Thomas swung the gun toward him. I dropped my weight and drove my heel into Thomas’s shin. His grip loosened. Adrian lunged. The gun fired into the ceiling. Marcus hit Thomas from the side, and all three men slammed into the wall. I stumbled away, one hand under my belly. Thomas struck Marcus and reached for the weapon. Adrian kicked it beneath a cabinet. Matteo’s guards rushed in and forced Thomas to the floor. Camille appeared behind them, crying. “I can explain.” “Start with the eighteen months before you met my husband,” I said.

She did, because Nevada State Police were already coming after Matteo’s security system reported the shooting. Thomas had recruited Camille through a consulting company he secretly controlled. Her job was to get close to Adrian, feed his ego, learn schedules, and push me out before the Tahoe vote. Victor Sloan supplied money and outside muscle. Thomas supplied Vale access. Camille supplied information. The affair was real, but it had been engineered. The courthouse SUV and townhouse attack were pressure tactics meant to scare me away. When Matteo invited me anyway, Thomas cloned my number, framed me as the leak, and planned to remove me during the blackout. “You chose her,” I told Adrian. “Thomas opened the door, but you walked through it.” He looked shattered. “I know.”

Marcus produced records linking Thomas to the bracelet and burner phones. Matteo had the original appendix I sent before leaving New York. Camille surrendered her messages. Victor’s people abandoned him, and Thomas was arrested on weapons, conspiracy, and kidnapping charges while investigators began unraveling the rest. Adrian’s family council stripped him of unilateral authority over security and major agreements. He did not fight them.

Two weeks later, Adrian came to my attorney’s Manhattan office to sign the final divorce settlement. No bodyguards. No excuses. “I loved you badly,” he said. “That doesn’t make it love I can trust,” I answered. He looked at my belly. “Can I still be his father?” “If you learn that being a father is responsibility, not ownership.” For once, he simply nodded.

Three months later, I held my son in a hospital room. Matteo sent a handwritten card: YOUR WORD IS STILL YOUR OWN. Adrian visited after asking permission. He stood beside the bassinet and cried without hiding it. I felt no triumph, only clarity. I had lost a marriage, survived betrayal, exposed a conspiracy, and walked away with something more valuable than revenge: the right to decide what happened next. My son curled his fingers around mine. I whispered, “That’s the only legacy we’re keeping.”
