PART 2

“DOWN!” Dominic roared. He hit me from the side, driving me and Noah behind the stone pillar as the first gunman swung his weapon toward us. Gabriel moved just as fast. He slammed the man’s wrist against the SUV door. The pistol clattered beneath the vehicle. Meredith drove her elbow backward into the attacker’s face and broke free. The second man rushed Dominic. Dominic met him halfway, caught his jacket, and drove him into the hood hard enough to dent it. The children screamed. “Get them inside the guardhouse!” I shouted. “No!” Clare clung to me. “Mom!” Adrienne was already retreating toward the mansion. I pointed at her. “She signaled them!” Dominic looked over his shoulder. “Adrienne!” She stopped. “She’s lying!” “Then come back here.” Adrienne didn’t move.

The second gunman tore free and struck Dominic across the cheek. Dominic staggered, blood appearing at the corner of his mouth. I grabbed a fallen metal flashlight and swung it into the attacker’s forearm when he reached for Dominic again. He cursed. Dominic tackled him onto the gravel. Gabriel pinned the first man against the SUV while security finally surrounded them. “Who hired you?” Dominic demanded. Neither answered. I ran to my children, checking four terrified faces with shaking hands. Adrienne whispered, “This is because of her. She brought danger here.” I stood. “Search his phone.” The gunman’s eyes flashed. That was enough.

Gabriel pulled the phone from the man’s pocket. Dominic took it. The screen showed three recent messages from a contact saved only as A.L.: They are at the gate. Make sure they leave before Dominic sees the children. The last message had been sent six minutes earlier. Dominic slowly turned toward his bride. “A.L.” Adrienne’s face collapsed. “That could be anyone.” “Your initials are Adrienne Lockach.” “Dominic, listen to me—” He crossed the space between them. “Did you know about my children?” She said nothing. “Answer me!” “I knew there was a possibility.”

My stomach dropped. “How?” Adrienne looked toward Gabriel, but Gabriel shook his head. “Don’t look at me.” Dominic seized her wrist before she could retreat. “How?” Adrienne finally screamed, “Cecilia told me!” The driveway went silent again. Dominic’s aunt Cecilia had practically raised him after his father died. She controlled family finances, attorneys, reputations—and during our marriage, she had reminded me almost weekly that a Gallow wife who could not produce children was useless.

Dominic released Adrienne as if she had burned him. “Call Cecilia.” Gabriel did. She arrived twenty minutes later, furious until she saw the detained men. Dominic met her at the steps. “Did Julianne notify us about a pregnancy?” Cecilia’s eyes went straight to me. That was her mistake. Dominic noticed. “You knew.” “Dominic, there were concerns about authenticity.” “FOUR BABIES were born.” Cecilia’s voice sharpened. “You were divorcing. You were unstable. The organization needed continuity.” “So you hid my children?” “I protected you.”

I shoved the medical folder into Dominic’s hands. “Read page eleven.” His eyes moved across the fertility specialist’s note. His expression changed. “Recommended male-factor evaluation.” He looked up. “Mine?” “Yes,” I said. “I was never diagnosed as sterile. They called it unexplained infertility. Your doctor wanted to test both of us.” Gabriel rubbed his face. “Dominic refused the second round.” Dominic stared at him. Gabriel continued quietly. “You were angry. Cecilia told everyone not to mention it again.”

Adrienne laughed suddenly, almost hysterically. “You see? This changes nothing. Those children still need DNA testing.” “Agreed,” I said. Everyone looked at me. “Independent lab. My lawyer chooses one. Samples witnessed by both sides.” Dominic nodded immediately. “Done.”

Then Cecilia said something that made my blood run cold. “Testing may prove paternity, Julianne. But it will also prove why you really disappeared.”

I turned toward her.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed. “What does that mean?”

Cecilia smiled at me.

“She hasn’t told you what happened the night she left you.”

PART 3

Dominic looked at me like the ground had shifted beneath him. “Julianne?” Cecilia stepped forward. “Tell him.” I wanted to hit her. Instead, I opened the final section of my folder. “The night I left, I found a draft order on your home-office printer.” I handed Dominic the photocopy. His eyes moved over it. The document authorized Gallow security to place me under permanent protection, track my vehicles, restrict unsupervised travel, and report every medical appointment directly to the family office. Dominic went pale. “I never signed this.” “I know,” I said. “Because it was prepared for you by Cecilia.” Cecilia’s confidence finally cracked. Dominic turned on her. “You told Julianne I ordered this?” “You would have eventually.” “You forged my authority?” “I did what was necessary.”

I continued before she could twist it again. “I left that night because I thought Dominic had decided I was property. Three weeks later, I discovered I was pregnant. My attorney contacted the Gallow legal office. Cecilia intercepted everything.” Adrienne shook her head. “And what does that have to do with me?” I faced her. “You knew before tonight.” She looked away. Gabriel unlocked the captured gunman’s phone. “More messages.” He read aloud. “‘If the ex-wife contacts anyone about the children, notify Mrs. G.’” He looked up. “This thread starts almost four years ago.” Dominic stared at Adrienne. “You knew for four years?” “Cecilia said they might not be yours!” “So you helped hide them?” “I was protecting our future!”

“Our future?” Dominic’s voice became terrifyingly quiet. “You hired men to frighten four five-year-olds away from my house.” Adrienne slapped him. The sound cracked across the driveway. Dominic didn’t move. “Take her inside,” he told security. “Do not hurt her. Do not let her leave until the police arrive.” Adrienne lunged toward me instead. “You ruined everything!” She caught my shoulder, but Meredith stepped between us and shoved her back. Security restrained Adrienne as she screamed Dominic’s name.

Three days later, we sat in a private conference room in White Plains while an independent geneticist placed four sealed reports on the table. Dominic sat opposite me. Noah’s leg bounced nervously beneath his chair. Elise held my hand. The doctor spoke plainly. “Mr. Gallow, the probability of paternity for each child exceeds 99.99 percent.” Dominic closed his eyes. For several seconds, the most feared man I had ever known simply sat there breathing. Then Henry asked, “Does that mean you’re really our dad?” Dominic opened his eyes. They were wet. “Yeah, buddy.” His voice broke. “It does.”

The family confrontation came a week later. Dominic summoned Cecilia, Gabriel, senior relatives, attorneys, and every captain who had repeated the story that I had failed him. I stood beside my children. Dominic stood alone at the head of the table. “Julianne was never diagnosed as incapable of having children,” he said. “I refused medical testing because I was proud, angry, and afraid of what the answer might say about me. My family protected that pride by blaming her. Cecilia then concealed notice that my children existed. Adrienne knew and helped preserve the lie.” Cecilia tried to interrupt. Dominic raised one hand. “You’re finished.” He removed her from every family trust and management position that day. Adrienne’s marriage was challenged by Dominic’s attorneys, and the armed intimidation case went to law enforcement. Gabriel kept his position only after admitting what he knew and agreeing to testify.

Dominic asked me afterward, “Can we start over?” “No,” I said. His face tightened. “But you can start with them.” I nodded toward the children. “Being their father doesn’t make you my husband again. And they are not heirs, symbols, bargaining chips, or future Gallow soldiers. They’re kids.” He swallowed. “Understood.”

Months later, he was still learning. He bought Noah the wrong science notebook, mixed up Elise and Clare’s pickup times, and once arrived at Henry’s school concert forty minutes early because he was terrified of missing it. The children stopped calling him Dominic. Eventually, they called him Dad without thinking. I never returned to the estate. I never remarried him. I didn’t need revenge, either. The truth had done something stronger.

It forced a powerful man to become accountable.

And for the first time in our lives, Dominic Gallow understood that loving a family did not mean owning one.
